In collaboration with the

6th ERCIM WORKSHOP "USER INTERFACES FOR ALL"
Convitto della Calza, Florence, Italy, 25-26 October 2000

and with the occasion of the kick-off meeting on 28th October 2000
of the new project-Working Group IS4ALL

Scope

The aims of the concertation meeting is to bring together a number of Healthcare Telematics projects to be exposed to the principles of universal access and to develop a mutual understanding of the challenges and opportunities of universal access in the healthcare telematics sector. This one-day meeting will seek to facilitate a review of the state of the art and exchange of experiences between universal access advocates (as represented by the IS4ALL project  http://is4all.ics.forth.gr (a thematic network in the form of a Working Group) and the healthcare telematics industry and research community (as represented by the invited Health Telematics projects). This will help participants to develop common insights and identify areas of potential benefit and cross-fertilisation of available knowledge.

During the meeting, project representatives will obtain a detailed insight of the aims and objectives of the IS4ALL project and will become aware of its anticipated outcomes and potential synergies. In this respect, the IS4ALL project will make available prior to the meeting appropriate background documentation. Participants will be asked to briefly present outlines of their projects and formulate project-specific challenges to the universal access community. Following the presentations, the group will seek to address questions and issues specific to each project in an attempt to develop a common vocabulary and terms of reference as to the scope and meaning of universal access in the broad area of healthcare telematics. The meeting will close by consolidating the results of the discussion and to relate them to IS4ALL project milestones and outcomes.

Participants preparation

The IS4ALL project will make available to project participants prior to the meeting appropriate background documents regarding Universal Access and Universal Design in Information Society Technologies. Participants are expected to provide brief project overviews, identifying overall objectives, technical approach and user focus. Projects investigating specific accessibility issues (e.g., diversity in target users, technologies or contexts of use), are expected to present the underlying challenges, pointing out the issue of concern, why it is relevant and how the project sets out to cope with it (i.e., techniques and methods used). Projects, which do not have a focus on accessibility, are expected to provide insights, which depict the relevance of the topic to the project and the wider area of Healthcare Telematics. Such insights could take the form of position statements elaborating on:
